Patris

This once grand city was the center of arcane research until a grand expiremnt went wrong and destroyed it shortly after the Time of Tears. Nobody knows the exact cause of the disaster, but whatever it was destroyed a large portion of the center of the city and opened portals to a variety of, if not all, other planes, loosing all sorts of creatures into the city. Rather than abandon Patris completely, its residents moved to the outer rim of the city limits, and Patris now has a ring surrounding it of shanty towns and arcane research camps. It still remains a place of learning and practicing magic as casters from all over the world come to be taught in the arcane arts. The city proper is filled with unfound treasures: old arcane scrolls, magical equipment, potions and things one can only imagine, created by the old archmages; but these treasures are in the middle of a host of monsters that come through the portals and thus it is extremely dangerous to go looking for them. Explorers and adventurers that have entered the city, the few that make it back anyways, report that archons, angels, elementals, demons, devils, rakshasa and any extraplanar being imagineable haunt the ancient streets and destroyed ruins. In the past few years reports of demons and devils warring in the center of the city, seemingly having found a new battleground for the Blood War, have brought followers of Erathis to the city in an effort to purge them. This idea has been much welcomed by current archmages of the city as since the destruction of the city they have been trying to find a way to somehow reclaim it or at the very least the trove of treasures that are lost inside. The settlements surrounding Patris vary, some are little more than camps of adventurers who delve inside the city. Others are arcane research camps, housing wizards, sorcerors, warlocks and artificers from around the world who have come to learn from the archmages and study the monstrous beings that now inhabit the city. Also, many shantytowns have sprung up, providing inns, smiths and other necessities for adventurers seeking fortune in the city. Villages of normal citizens are normally found a bit further out than the normal ring; farms, orchards and other menial labors are provided to keep supplies going into the city. By law, any and all items retrieved from the city must be shown to an archmage in order to determine its power and function, the archmages take full responsibility for the destruction of Patris and wish to make sure anything of immense power does not leave their care. The archmages compensate for any items they do not allow to leave the city and often times will buy even lesser items at a good price from those who find it. However, in a lot of the shantytowns, shady dealers often hire adventurers who can be discreet to enter the city and return to them anything they find at great profit.
